This is a guest post from Michael Teoh:

What is it with the obsession over wanting the success that other people have? Why not try to make the best of your own situation, especially with the countless opportunities readily available for you to pursue? Why are you paralyzed in your current situation when faced with the possibility of pursuing something that will ultimately lead to your own personalized form of success?

This obsession with success goes much deeper than merely wanting to see yourself at the top.  It is part of your subconscious telling you that, in this pursuit, failing to achieve a positive outcome would automatically mean that you are highly unlikely to gain happiness.

In success, there is not a one size fits all.  What you perceive as success and how you go about attaining that success can be vastly different from the next person since everyone is born unique – each with our own gifts and each with our own potential that is unlike any other.  Though you might have believed that your gifts are very similar to other people’s, understand that no two potentials are the same.

The best way to achieve success under your current circumstances would be to create your own path by unlocking the potential that is already within you. You may not believe it, but you already have something in you that has been prompting you toward a great destiny.  The hard part of this quest for greatness is the process of unlocking the ability to look inside yourself to find your potential and gain the discipline to persevere, especially during tough times.

According to a 4 year research study found in the award-winning book, Potential Matrix: Strategies to Unlock Your Potential for Success in Anything You Do, there are three parts, or cores, to unlocking the human potential which can aid in your pursuit towards success:

  • Self- programming core which requires that you shift your mindset
  • Self- action core that asks you to take actionable steps
  • Self- impact core which will keep you going once you’ve encountered difficulties.

First Core: Self- programming

Who you are as an individual is directly affected by your understanding of the world around you. Therefore, for you to truly achieve success, you first need to believe that it is something within your grasp. You may think that you already believe that, but a look at your results may tell a different story. If you have not already actively taken steps to achieve success, then your beliefs about success have yet to be ingrained into every part of your being.

What you believe and hold dear is often a reflection of the actions you take and the habits you practice every day of your life. To start infusing the belief of success within yourself, start by actively experimenting with new things and reflecting systematically on them post experimentation.

Simple Step:

Constantly learning new things about yourself does not require much time or effort.  It simply requires about 5 minutes each day for you to take note of the things that you did differently today and what could be done better the next time the same situation arises. This simple habit can have a powerful effect on your life.

Second Core: Self-Action

The only difference between a good idea and a great idea is in the execution of that idea. Many people have claimed that they have the next billion dollar idea, however, without any tangible results, all there is to that claim is the potential of what might be. In the real world, what might be is not a validation to that great idea.

It’s difficult to produce long lasting and positive results without vision, perseverance and passion. One of these elements without the other cannot fuel the vehicle that will ultimately bring about success. These three elements within the self-action core implore an individual to better themselves by seeking out the proper knowledge, attaining the proper skill sets, and building the proper connections to gain the insights to build a network that will propel an idea into becoming a sustainable solution.

Simple Step:

One of the easiest ways to unlock the self-action core is to start by acquiring a new skill. Skills like pitching an idea, public speaking, negotiation and attention to detail are universal skills that successful individuals possess that have ultimately tipped the odds in their favor.

Third Core: Self- Impact

After implementing the first two cores, the last, and possibly the hardest, core to actively incorporate into daily life would be the self-impact core. This core demands that you think outside of yourself and your immediate needs, to identify a unified problem that is confounding people around you and put in time, effort and resources towards solving that problem.

We, as human beings, are pre-programmed to think about ourselves first and others later, to ensure that we continue the survival of our bloodline above all else. Implementing the third core would infer that you think of ways to better the environment around you by any means necessary, not just because it benefits you, but because it will also better the lives of people you do not know.

Simple Step:

Being a product of your upbringing and societal circumstance, the best way to unlock the third core is by solving the problems that are closest to your heart. Think of problems within your scope of influence and important to you that need solving.  This will propel you to find a solution once the initial fire that lead you to start the project has died off. You must first do what is necessary and possible in order to start doing what is impossible.

In the pursuit of success, it starts with you. Cement the idea of wanting success in your subconscious through the habits and actions you take every day. Actively take steps to keep the fire burning by reflecting and keeping yourself anchored to what is most important.
